Cooperative Profile

πρώτο καταστατικόLabor and love of the members of the Agricultural Beekeeping Cooperative of Nikiti in Chalkidiki underlies the success of the product ‘Honey SITHON”. The Cooperative, one of the largest in Europe, was established in 1952. The rare flora, bees can visit in the area, combined with the suitable climate constitutes one of the main reasons why honey Sithon is among the best honeys in Greece and Europe. The other reasons are: up-to-date infrastructure, high-level of bee-keeping skills, great love and tradition in honey. In the mid 80’s , the Cooperative took a step forward by building its own packaging plant. In 1987, the standardization of honey started, ushering in a new age!

Untitled-1A honey-like story continues… The rest of our sweet story is relatively anticipated…In the following years, the Cooperative has been developed through investments in technology, expertise and selected human resources. It soon became one of the biggest and most sophisticated apicultural cooperatives in Europe. In the early 90’s, it was one of the first cooperatives to enter computerization in the organization of work. Moreover, it created its own laboratory for honey quality control, aiming at certified quality. Honey is checked for its quality in the laboratory for quality control they possess in collaboration with the Aristotle University Of Thessaloniki, Institute of Greek Apiculture and two of the top European laboratories for honey quality control APPLICA and QSI. The land of milk and … honey! Nowadays, more than 70,000 swarm of bees and 140 apiarists work for your honey! Each one of the apiarists has large colonies- from 500 to 1600 beehives- and has devoted his/her life to honey production. Professional apiarists, committed to honey production, transfer the beehives anywhere throughout Greece, following the flower streets. Formerly, the transportation of beehives was taken place only in Chalkidiki. At the present time, the apicultural year starts from Peloponnesus or Central Greece in November and finishes in Macedonia in spring. Macedonia is the place where polyfloral honey is produced from June to August. The cooperative, with its 4000 square meters of installations, produces a wide range of different types of honey, mostly polyfloral and pine honey, which exceeds 1000 tones and accounts for about 12-14% of the total Greek honey production!

Quality Control

Because “We don’t care two straws” is not our slogan!εργαστήριο ποιοτικού ελέγχου We ensure that the taste and quality of our products remain unchanged, from production time till consumption time.   Therefore, standardization is solely checked by us, while the ready to be packaged honey and the rest products are checked in the organized laboratory for quality control we own. Since 2000, the Agricultural Beekeeping Cooperative of Nikiti has been certified according to ISO 9002 and HACCP ELOT 1416, and according to ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and IFS.

Honey - Honey Bee

With nature’s care! Honey is the sweetest gift of nature to human! Its unique nutritional and healing qualities were known since ancient times! According to Mythology, Great Zeus was raised with honey by nymph Melissa (meaning honey). Hippocrates recommended it in many cases, while Democritus, the father of nuclear theory, who lived up to107 years, used to say: “You need to wet your insides with honey and your outsides with oil” Honeymoon! It is magical following the trip of a bee to honey-making. Bees collect sweet substances from nectar of plants or from secretions of living parts of plants or from excretions of plant-sucking insects. They transfer them to the beehive where they enrich them with extremely valuable components, making honey and storing it to honeycombs! Analyzing honey…melisia Honey contains 70-80% sugars, mostly glucose and fructose. 180 nutrients have been identified till now, but there is still work to be done! It contains 16% water, 18 different organic acids, proteins and amino acids, minerals in small quantities (potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, etc.), enzymes, protein complexes, vitamins (B2, B6, C, D, E, pantothenic acid, folic acid, etc. ), natural flavouring substances, etc. Dr Honey…the sweetest doctor! Hippocrates recommended a solution with honey to soothe cough and heal sore throats caused by virus. Even nowadays, honey is thought as an effective and alternative to over-the-counter cough medicine. The bacteriostatic power of honey is one more unique quality, as it prevents the multiplication of bacteria. It is ideal for sore throats, wounds, burns! Consuming honey daily, it does not only mean that we eat something tasty and sweet, but it also means that we help our health! In addition to energy, it also offers well-being, regulates body’s metabolism, protects against stomach or intestinal disorders, enhances the heart function and blood flow, represses anaemia, protects liver and kidney! In summertime, a beehive contains:melissa
  • 1 Queen Bee
  • 250-300 drones
  • 60.000 worker bees (of which, 20.000 are the collector bees)
Duties carried out by a worker bee, according to her age Age in days:
  • 1-2 Cleans the cells, ventilates, cools and heats the hive.
  • 3-11 Feeds the larva.
  • 12-17 Produces wax, builds cells from wax, brings nectar and pollen in.
  • 18-21 Guards the hive entrance.
  • 22-40 Gathers nectar, pollen, propolis, water.
  • 35-45 End of life.
The Queen Bee A virgin Queen bee, 5 days after she emerges from her queen cell, she will mate in flight with approximately 10 or more drones. Their sperm is saved in sperm cells and the Queen Bee returns to the beehive where she lays up to 2000 eggs per day. A mixture of substances is excreted by the Queen’s exocrine glands and it is called royal substance. This substance is responsible for the peaceful synchronization in the behaviour between all the members in the beehive. Drones Drones are the male bees of the colony. They develop from eggs that have not been fertilized. Drones cannot sting because they do not have a sting, which is a characteristic of the females and only them. Also, they cannot gather nectar or pollen. Drone’s main function is to fertilize the Queen. The mating occurs in flight and away from the hive. A strong colony has nearly 300 drones. But when the food is not enough, the worker bees drive the drones out of the hive. Hence, they die since they cannot gather food.
